Misdemeanors
Misdemeanors
are minor crimes that have a punishment ranging from a small fine (maximum of $2,000) to a loss of freedom of up to one (1) year, or any combination of the two. In Texas, these infractions are categorized into
three classes (A, B, and C).
• Class A
misdemeanors can include punishment of up to one (1) year in jail; a maximum fine of $2000; and up to 3 years community supervision (if extended). Examples: Violation of a protective order, resisting arrest,
criminal mischief, etc.
• Class B misdemeanors
have the same amount of possible monetary fines and community supervision, but maximum jail time is 6 months. Examples: a first DWI charge, criminal trespass, etc.
• Class C
misdemeanors do not include any jail time, but fines can be assessed as punishment of up to
$500.00. Examples: Public Intoxication, bail jumping, etc.
